about

One day, I sat down at the piano and played the first thing that my fingers went to. It was all white keys and sounded really nice. I thought, “Well since I can easily play the voicing in this key, I’ll move it up a half step to unfamiliar territory so I can actually pick apart what is going on.” After that, I decided to play each note one at a time to discover the melodic possibilities. That turned into the repeating ostinato figure played by guitar and piano. The song starts in 7 because that voicing had seven notes. The odd time signature isn’t an intellectual exercise, but rather the melodic development of a natural harmonic shape. The solo section comes from an impromptu jam session right before heading off to the pool.
