One way I practice is by selecting at random a song (from a list that I’m learning), an area of focus (melody, LH chords, bass line, etc) and a descriptive verb from a massive list that I am constantly adding to. One day I got “Best Part” by Daniel Ceasar, “melody harmonization” and “Spiral.” I got 2 notes in to harmonizing the melody, really
liked the chords that resulted, and made it the piano part for this song. The driving motion is every voice from the first chord moving outward to the second chord. The bass line actually comes from the same practice exercise but from a different day and different set of 3 focus areas. I think it was Sweet Home Alabama, bass lines, and I can’t remember the descriptive word. Put it all together, add a melody and a bridge, and you’ve got yourself a song!
